Unless it’s your first time here—in which case, welcome (to die)!—you know quite well our love for Silent Hill. So, when word got out in 2024 that GraveRipper frontman Corey Parks had arranged a black metal reimagining of some of the tracks from the legendary Silent Hill 2 soundtrack, released under the moniker Restless Dreams, it was a no-brainer that your trusty co-nerds would be eager to line up an interview. Rather than our standard format, however, we opted for a rare entry into our spin-off Side Quest series to better focus on the then upcoming album. The conversation was thorough, engaging and jovial, save for shared concerns regarding parent company Konami’s handling of the survival horror franchise. But even back then, we knew that there was more to the story that would need to be discussed at a future date.
Fast forward to just one year later and GraveRipper have returned in full force and armed with their ice cold LP From Welkin to Tundra. Not only is their sophomore full length an absolute, ahem, ripper, it was all the reason we needed to link up again. While we understood a return trip to the remote foggy town was on the agenda, it’s the Kojima-led masterpiece Metal Gear Solid that proves claim to his blackened heart. The following chat with Parks goes down the rabbit hole to explore his speedrunning world record placement, the games that helped inspire his discography, the unlikely comeback of Konami as a gaming powerhouse and much, much more. The doors to the Kill Feed arcade have once more opened to the black thrash hesher and it’s time to make him an official player character.
From Welkin to Tundra is available now via Wise Blood Records and can be purchased here.
