Yang Yoseop made his solo debut all the way back in 2012, which is crazy to think about. Not only has his group endured through name and agency changes, but he’s been churning out his own work for fourteen years. I’m a big fan of his voice, but I can’t say that much of his music has hit me in any memorable way. He tends to prefer weepy ballads and new single Fade Away (옅어져 가) is no different.
Yes, Yoseop sounds extraordinary. He still very much has “it” — an ability to compel listeners through his voice alone. There’s a satisfying balance of power and vulnerability driving every moment in Fade Away. The song ebbs and flows through multiple mini-climaxes, delivering plenty of pathos. But without melodies that lodge themselves in your head, Fade Away exists as a worthy, tasteful track that doesn’t pull me back for further listens.
