Jang Haneum participated in last year’s Boys II Planet and will debut in that program’s spin-off group. He’s been releasing solo music for awhile now and has somehow passed me by despite having a brilliant voice. When I heard teasers for new title track Wanna, I was impressed with its clubby house sound. The full song doesn’t disappoint.
Wanna exists in a dancefloor lineage that has always appealed to me. I love this style of upbeat house music. It has such an optimistic sound and works especially well if the accompanying vocal is strong. As a song, Wanna is pretty simple. I’m not sure if its chorus does enough to totally work for me, but I appreciate its multifaceted approach and the fact that it still makes room for melodic hooks even if the structure is quite clipped.
Better yet are Wanna‘s verses. They have gentle sense of lift that whisk us into the song with plenty of character and a palpable sense of anticipation. I love how the song makes room for dynamic spikes in melody, with effective high notes peppered judiciously throughout the track. This adds important range that helps expand the relatively simple lines of melody. And in this economy, the song throws in more bang for our buck with a full bridge and climactic chorus that sneaks in a few more power notes.
