Denver band Insipidus do it all—They write and produce their own music, even going so far as to create their own album art and merch designs. And if they don’t have a gig lined up for the night, they don’t let that stop them—If you’re local to Denver, you still might catch them out busking on the streets. We caught up with them to talk about their latest self-release album, Nearest Dusk, and whatever else they have on the horizon.
What was the writing and recording process like for Nearest Dusk, and how have you been promoting it as a self-release?
Usually I’d come in with a melody or a rough idea and we’d build it out together. The songs came together over a longer stretch of time, so the album reflects different phases of where we were at.We recorded with Drew Smith at 2839 Studios on Colfax in 2025. It was a big learning experience for us, especially on the recording side.

As far as promotion, we’ve been pretty guerrilla about it. Playing in unexpected places, reaching out to venues nonstop, and just bringing it up whenever we can.
Tell us more about the awesome artwork by Travis and the story behind it.
The artwork was painted by our drummer Travis Hatley for the album. It’s a pretty large piece, acrylic on wood, and it ties into the story behind the title track Nearest Dusk.

Y’all take a guerilla approach to music a lot of times, busking on the streets, and you’ve gotten a bit internet famous for it. What inspired you to do that, and how is it going?
We absolutely love playing in the streets. It’s part of the world we’re trying to build. Some of our best shows have actually been out there. (Shout out Ritual Tattoos)

It’s also kind of a reaction to how music can feel dead or disposable. Playing the streets gives it identity again. It’s the renegade version of ‘keeping it real’. And we’re all in on that.
Do you have anything else coming up on the horizon, like more music, show, etc. you’d like to announce?
Yeah, we’ve got new material that’s almost finalized and we can’t wait to record it once everything’s tightened up. Hopefully we’ll start this summer.
We’re always looking for more shows too, and we’re trying to get on bills with bigger acts.
