The Y2K trend has been done to death in K-pop and the songs themselves rarely sound all that Y2K anymore. Girl group Queenz Eye seem to believe there’s room for even more nostalgia, naming their new single after the era. It’s funny (and sad) that after years of this Y2K fever we still haven’t gotten a new K-pop song in the vein of Max Martin/Cheiron produced Britney/BSB/Nsync. Where are these millennial pop slammers?
Instead, we have this Y2K, which uses the term as a catchphrase while sounding nothing like 2000-era pop. This feels incredibly cynical, feasting on the dregs of a dying trend. Simply referencing song titles of that era and saying “millennium” a few times isn’t enough to make this convincing. I wonder if anyone involved in the production was even alive back then? The only thing this track might have in common with Y2K is the obnoxious sound and style of the Bratz dolls, though even they didn’t emerge until 2001. As a connoisseur of turn-of-the-millennium pop music, this comeback is actively offensive to my ears and my very sensibility!
