When social media creator Luke O’Halloran — one half of internet duo Luke And Sassy Scott — came across this unit in Elwood, the home featured plain white walls and rather ‘lifeless’ interiors.

The real draw card was its abundance of natural light, proximity to the beach, and that it was close to his older brother Scott, who found success posting their hilarious antics on TikTok while living together during the pandemic.

They’ve since carved out careers as full-time social media stars, with millions of followers, and a popular self-titled podcast they release weekly.

‘It felt like a blank canvas to make your own,’ Luke says of the home. ‘There was also a third bedroom, and that excited me to potentially make a podcast studio in it.’

With a vision to bring some retro energy back into the circa-1970s building, Luke turned to Liberty Interiors founder Nicole Rosenberg for a creative renovation.

‘I told Nicole that I really wanted to add in colour. It was not to feel like The Wiggles house, but a space where all the rooms felt like their own, while still complementing each other.’

‘The brief was to “go for it”,’ Nicole says. ‘And so I did!’

Given full creative freedom, the interior designer put forward a fresh selection of colours that make a big impact from the moment you step inside. At the entryway, a dusk-pink shade sets the tone for the rest of the ‘whimsical’ interiors, while part of the kitchen entry has been cleverly converted into a much-needed European laundry, concealed in blue joinery.

Warm clay tones and a wavy banquette seat characterise the cosy living zone, complete with new V-Groove panelling from James Hardie.

‘The spaces were previously lifeless, so I wanted to create texture wherever possible,’ Nicole explains.

Nicole’s bold styling and art curation also made a huge impact. Statement pieces range from Fenton & Fenton‘s eclectic lamps to cowboy-themed paintings from Urban Road Art, and the bedrooms are covered in palm trees and abstract patterned wallpapers by Pickawall.

Despite being a largely cosmetic renovation — avoiding any structural changes to the footprint — the compact home has been totally transformed into a place fitting of Luke’s playful personality.

He even managed to live in the unit throughout the eight-month-long project, braving the constant dust of the project daily! But he says the end result was undeniably worth the wait.

‘Honestly, the feeling I get when entering the house is surreal,’ Luke says.

‘I’m so proud of my space, and so proud that this is now my home!’
