TUNEXX made their debut earlier this year… or so I’m told. Gun to head, I couldn’t tell you a thing about that song or the group in general, but that’s why having this blog is such a useful record. It looks like I did not enjoy their debut single I’m Alive at all, but also didn’t hate it enough to actually remember it. So, I guess we’ll call Blue Mode a second chance / fresh start.
Unfortunately, I fear I may be writing a variation of this same post next time TUNEXX makes a comeback. Blue Mode melds languid hip-hop grooves with trendy drum-and-bass moments. Throughout it all, the melodies unfold like they’re stuck in syrup. The entire song is essentially the same melodic riff repeated with slight variations, almost always resolving in the same place. This creates a very monotonous flow that stops Blue Moon from going anywhere. It’s like we’re stuck in a moody loop. It doesn’t feel like anything is accomplished, which is a very unsatisfying takeaway from a K-pop track.
