The idol group name generator must be getting pretty empty because “WHIB” is a strange moniker for a new K-pop group. Apparently, it’s meant to be a combination of the words “white” and “black,” showcasing the guys’ variety of charms. Okay, then!
Title track Bang! gets them off to a frustratingly familiar start. Prior to this, they released another song (Dizzy) that failed to leave any mark on my memory. Bang! is more aggressive in approach but follows an established K-pop template. The guys perform it well, but there’s nothing within the track we haven’t heard countless times before. I’m so tired of the ‘funky bassline anti-drop chorus.’ It’s become so overused. I’m starting to dread it almost as much as K-pop’s beloved ‘perfunctory second verse trap breakdown.’ Producers need new ideas, because nothing about Bang! makes me anticipate where WHIB’s music might go in the future.
