With over 4,000 songs on my iPhone’s “K-Pop Singles” playlist, I thought it would be fun to add a bit of unpredictability to my song review posts. So as a result, we have the “Random Shuffle Review” feature.
The rules are simple. I fire up my playlist, press “shuffle,” and whatever song plays first gets the full Bias List treatment!

EDM electropop had a stranglehold on K-pop for a number of years in the early-2010’s, and that was truly a glorious time. It was also an era of songs that didn’t take themselves too seriously. “Lore” wasn’t necessarily a thing in K-pop, though T-ara recorded a series of mini-movies that helped establish this approach.
Sexy Love is the rare song that encompasses both sides of this coin. On its face, it’s a silly dance number with a gimmicky (but wonderful!) chorus. But then there’s the “drama version” of its music video, which lasts nearly fifteen minutes and sees the group traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Pick your poison, I guess. A battle royale or a series of sexy mannequins…
The song itself is absolutely delightful. It’s in on its own “sexy” joke, but never skimps on strong melodies and resounding, club-ready production. It’s the last in a long series of songs that utilize a repetitive, earworm hook to hypnotize listeners. Their string of singles from Bo Peep Bo Peep to Sexy Love almost play like T-ara’s own little cinematic universe. It’s a songwriting technique that’s rarely used in this same way anymore, but for a track that could’ve wound up as little more than novelty, Sexy Love has stood the test of time.
