Song Review: Super Junior-L.S.S. – C’mon

New sub-unit Super Junior-L.S.S. has somehow become the most prolific project from the group, releasing multiple Japanese tracks and now the one-two punch of Suit Up and C’mon. Though it had high points, Suit Up squandered much of its potential by  failing to find an engaging chorus to compliment its fun funk instrumental. Follow-up C’mon dives further into silliness and doesn’t work for me at all.

Longtime readers will know my aversion to songs that are too pleased with their own humor or cleverness. To me, C’mon feels like a bad SNL sketch. I guess it’s supposed to be funny, but its incessant shouting and awful drop chorus come across as annoying instead. It’s forced fun without the songwriting chops to back up its energy. The music video’s “extended pause” schtick is tired from the very beginning, but the track feels fragmented even in the audio recording.

I have a great fondness for Super Junior and their music, but their jokey tracks have never done much for me. It feels like this is a huge focus of L.S.S., positioning them as a trio of wacky uncles. They’ve nailed the brief, but it’s not a great look.
