It’s been fun to watch the Highlight members grow into elder statesmen of K-pop, continuing to go strong even as the group has dwindled to four. They’ve managed to keep their fans fed pretty consistently since their rebrand, though it’s been over a year since their last comeback. New single Body sees them return in great form, delivering a fun jolt of silliness.
The nostalgia inherent in Highlight’s vocals tends to elevate songs that would fall flat in different hands. I don’t think Body is anything special on its own, but the guys deliver it with flair and confidence that proves difficult to resist. The song’s quirky dance beat certainly helps, fusing elements of house with idiosyncratic electro riffs that give it plenty of character. I could do without the whistled sound that drives the first half of the chorus, but once the production seizes its full, propulsive potential we’re in good hands.
Body‘s catchy chorus is a double-edged sword. It’s upbeat and addictive, but I fear it’s also a one trick pony that will grow old faster than I’d like. Live performances are sure to showcase its energy better than a simple recording can, but we’ll see how I feel about that “shake your body” hook in a few weeks.
