Song Review: TWS – Oh Mymy: 7s

TWS are not set to debut until later this month, but as the first Pledis Entertainment boy group following the incredible success of Seventeen, many eyes are already on them. As a taste of their self-described “boyhood pop,” they’ve dropped a fun music video for pre-release Oh Mymy: 7s.

The early Seventeen vibes are strong with this one. The verses have the kind of rollicking funk sound that hearkens back to classics like Shining Diamond, though the song doesn’t go as hard. I like the nimble rhythm and bright energy of these segments. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it makes for a fun listen and ably showcases the guys’ skills as performers. I hope future releases will capitalize on this sound.

Frustratingly, Oh Mymy: 7s opts for a less robust centerpiece as its chorus. The song swerves into a chant-focused hook that feels tailor-made for platforms like TikTok. As far as this ubiquitous approach goes, it’s not an especially jarring transition and it’s not overly obnoxious, either. However, it still feels like a missed opportunity to go bigger and bolder. The second half of the chorus hints at this potential, but still doesn’t set its sights high enough. Then again, this is only a pre-release teaser. TWS has certainly captured my potential, but I’d love to see their title track veer further from this Seventeen sound to establish an identity of their own.
