Song Review: The Boyz (Sunwoo & Eric) – Honey

The Boyz have recently started releasing music videos for unit tracks. Last summer’s Passion Fruit got one and now we have a stylish visual for Sunwoo and Eric’s hip-hop track Honey, originally released on the group’s November album. Apart from its excellent title track, that album didn’t resonate with me the same way Christmas In August did. But although Honey isn’t a style I tend to gravitate toward, it’s held up well over the weeks.

Honey‘s biggest assets are its smooth, catchy chorus and the charisma of its performers. It opens with a tease of its central hook, offering an instantly memorable vocal that (for whatever reason) reminds me of Megan Thee Stallion’s Body. It must be the repetition of the word “Honey”! From here, hip-hop verses give way to a slick pre-chorus before the track swerves into a fun, singalong chorus. All elements of the track revolve around the same series of melodic loops, and this establishes a hypnotic quality that almost begs to be replayed. It’s not the most striking song in The Boyz’ arsenal, but its stylish sound extends their 2023 victory lap into the new year.
