Catch The Young’s debut song ended up growing on me over time, but my biggest impression was that the track was very strong but the performance left something to be desired. Funny enough, follow-up Voyager has the exact opposite problem. The guys sound much more comfortable here and the vocal performance is way more polished, but the song is kind of a bore.
It’s difficult being an idol rock group. The unique concepts that often set performance groups apart aren’t always available to a more traditional band, so a comeback’s success really rests on the song itself. Voyager has a warmth that’s suitable for the spring, but I’ve yet to unearth any melodies that stick in my ear. Apart from a rousing, sing-along finale, it’s all pleasant background music, unfortunately.
