DKZ are the latest K-pop group to release an album called “Reboot.” For whatever reason, these “reboots” have a really great track record, resulting in super strong work from Wonder Girls, Golden Child and Treasure. But this time around, I’m not really sure what DKZ are rebooting. Title track Like A Movie sounds like it could have fit comfortably on any of their other albums.
I’ve been wondering if the huge success of TWS’s Plot Twist would result in a resurgence of bright boy group fare. It’s probably still too early in the year to see this happen, but Like A Movie definitely fits within the lineage. It’s an amiable toe-tapper, playful and carefree. I tend to enjoy this style, but little about this song catches my ear. It opens with a catchy guitar loop before launching into a sprightly verse that gives way to a more aggressive pre-chorus.
Unfortunately, Like A Movie‘s chorus falls flat. The vocal mix is boring and the melodies stall rather than soar. The track wants to be punchy but somehow loses energy even as the guys are shouting at us. Maybe further listens will tease out more details, but for now this goes in one ear and out the other without leaving a trace. Even the album’s Sweetune-produced b-side is a letdown (and weirdly… doesn’t sound like Sweetune at all?).
