Song Review: Bullet Train (Choutokkyuu) – Steal A Kiss

Looking back at the blog, I realize I haven’t written a full song review for a Bullet Train single since the group reconfigured with four new members. More than a decade after their debut, they’re now a nine-member act — including a new vocalist. I’ve been mixed on their more recent output, though last year’s Call My Name was an early-summer standout.

The moment I heard teasers for Steal A Kiss, I knew this would be a song that matched my interests. I’m a sucker for these speedy electro dance tracks, buoyed by big melodic choruses and layered vocals. The full song mostly lives up to the previews, complete with a few quintessential Bullet Train quirks that are sure to polarize opinion.

Steal A Kiss opens at a clip, galloping forward with a thumping EDM beat and catchy verse. These moments are fine, but the song is all about its robust hook. The track sweeps you off your feet as soon as the chorus rushes in, delivering a glossy melody over swift energy that’s impossible to resist. The chirpy asides that follow won’t be for everyone (I still can’t decide if they’re cute or cloying), but I love the chorus of vocals that echoes them. When Steal A Kiss decides to forgo its eccentricities and focus on being 100% concentrated megawatt pop, it’s an undeniable success.
