Gosh, remember UP10TION? Their peak era seems much further in the past than it actually is. The group delivered a bunch of bangers and will eternally be part of my summer playlist with the classic Tonight. While promoting in the group, Lee Dongyeol went by the name Xiao. Now, it’s finally time for him to step out on his own with Drip Drop.
I can’t help but think of another idol soloist’s Drip Drop when I hear this title, and that comparison gives Dongyeol a steep hill to climb. As with many male solo releases, Taemin’s shadow looms large. Drip Drop attempts an evocative sensuality and strikes the right tone. However, the song is mostly melodic murk. There’s plenty of angst and drama, but the hooks just aren’t there. Dongyeol does his best to sell the material, aided by a few nice production flourishes. It’s just not enough to compensate for a lack of originality plaguing the track.
