Song Review: Seventeen – LALALI (Hip-Hop Team)

Alongside their full group comeback Maestro, Seventeen’s specialized units are also releasing music videos for their new songs. First up is the hip-hop team with LALALI. I’ve become increasingly weary of song titles that are little more than a series of “la las,” but this sub-unit has delivered surprises before.

LALALI makes boisterous use of the members, placing their colorful rap over even more colorful production. The beat is clattering and stuffed, fusing together disparate percussion to craft a groove that feels as if it’s been chopped into tiny pieces and sewn back together in an almost random fashion. The energy remains high and the track strikes a nice blend between structure and mayhem.

There’s not much of a song thrown over this chaos. The shout-chant chorus is pretty much what you’d expect from LALALI‘s all-caps title. I imagine it’ll make a great hype track in live settings, as it practically begs for audience participation. It’s a reliable burst of intensity and quite fun while it’s playing, but a stronger set of hooks would make me more eager to revisit the song on a regular basis.
