Song Review: YOUNITE – Pose!

Since their debut in 2022, YOUNITE has been one of those groups with little consistency across their discography. I’ll love a song, then I’ll hate a song, then I’ll love a song again. But when they hit the mark, their music can be fantastic. Fortunately, we’re in one of those eras today with new single Pose (姿態).

House music has enjoyed a resurgence lately, but so far it’s been the industry’s boy groups who’ve injected pop melody into the form. Pose has the runway-ready strut of many of its peers, but rather than climax in some spoken-word affirmation, the track centers itself on a sleek melody delivered in falsetto. This gives Pose a much fuller sound than expected. Yes, we still have a generic “strike a pose” post-chorus, but most current K-pop groups would’ve used that as their entire hook and called it a day. Pose goes a step further and is all the better for it.

Of course, things aren’t entirely perfect. No house track should ever be interrupted by a tempo-switching second verse, and the halfhearted interlude in the middle of Pose is particularly disappointing. The whole point of a song like this is that you’re dancing start to finish. Don’t pull the rug from under our feet, producers! Still, the majority of Pose does exactly what you’d hope, offering a jolt of exciting momentum bolstered by a few great hooks.
