The SeeYa (or now simply, “SeeYa”) were a vocal-focused trio active from 2006 to 2011. They were a big part of the K-pop landscape at the time, but not an act I’ve ever featured here since their promotional time ended before the blog began. However, the ladies have reunited for their twentieth anniversary, unveiling a new full album and title track Stay.
In a K-pop era where vocals are often relegated to an afterthought, it’s refreshing to hear a song like this — fully sung, and sung quite beautifully. And when taking my own taste into consideration, I’m pleased that Stay is a dance track rather than some drippy, sentimental ballad. The song is very simple, pinballing between the same three melodic refrains, but it’s executed with such confidence and precision that things never feel stale.
Echoing this approach, Stay‘s instrumental opts for a soft dance beat ornamented with guitar that echoes its melodic themes. This gives the track a timeless appeal. It may not bowl you over, but it’s infinitely listenable and will probably remain so for decades. In a world of TikTok challenges and catchphrasey hooks, it’s nice to hear something with a bit of sophistication.
