Song Review: Yerin (GFriend) – Shooting Star

It’s been four years since GFriend’s Yerin debuted as a soloist. Since then, she’s delivered exactly one comeback per year, so we might expect Shooting Star (조각별) to be her sole musical statement of 2026. With large gaps between albums, we might also expect her to make bigger musical statements. Alas, Shooting Star is pleasant but toothless.

On the plus side, this kind of effusive rock sound fits Yerin’s vocals well. It’s nice to hear her sing in a comfortable range, freed from the higher pitches K-pop songs often require. If she was sat in a coffeeshop somewhere strumming a guitar and singing this song, most people would probably be impressed. I doubt many of those listeners would rush out to stream the song afterward, but she certainly pulls off this style. Shooting Star‘s chorus has a nice cathartic drive without going overboard and I appreciate the delicate bridge that precedes the final chorus. However, there’s no way I’m remembering this song exists in a year’s time.
