Red Velvet’s Surfin’ Boy seemed to polarize opinion, but in a strange twist of fate we’ve got a song that actually sounds more like a classic Red Velvet “velvet” track in the form of Jun. K’s new single featuring Wendy.
This digital single doesn’t reinvent any wheels, but its smooth, groovy R&B sound is very satisfying. Jun. K and Wendy make excellent sparring partners. Both are well known for their vocals and it’s fun to hear two confident performers simply doing their thing. I also happen to be a big fan of male/female duets, and Your Lips doesn’t just segment the two voices into their own worlds but lets them meld together to craft a dynamic palette.
Your Lips is ultimately too restrained to stand as a major highlight, but as a nice late-summer bop the song gets the job done. As with so much K-pop these days, it sounds more like a Western pop song and is almost entirely performed in English. But compared to the West’s dire state of pop music at the moment, Your Lips might actually stand out.
