Tempest’s Hanbin gained attention as a Vietnamese member of a K-pop group, instantly guaranteeing a level of fame in his homeland. This has become more common in recent years, with acts like AHOF stuffed to the brim with foreign members, each able to bring some level of notoriety back to their own countries. The frequency of Tempest’s work has slowed since their debut and now it’s time for Hanbin to make his solo debut featuring popular Korean rapper punchnello.
No Fear meets expectations for how a solo male idol’s debut might sound. These songs tend to fall into a few pre-established slots. The Neptunes-esque Justin Timberlake vibe has been a favorite of recent years, but this big, splashy dance track also has strong precedence. Hanbin delivers the material just fine and No Fear‘s big, brassy centerpiece is a lot of fun in a Seventeen Very Nice sort of way. It’s canned funk, but I appreciate its attempt. In my mind, the exuberant instrumental centerpiece needs a few vocal melodies to buttress it, but overall this is an absolutely fine debut.
