Song Review: Mimiirose – The Flowers Swayed

Girl group Mimiirose continue their once a year comeback schedule, with The Flowers Swayed (흔들리지 않고 피는 꽃이 어딨어) their first new single since last September’s Flirting. The song sees them towing the line between sparkly synthpop and the more reserved girl group sound that’s been dominating 2024.

Choosing between these two influences, my taste (unsurprisingly) favors the synthpop side of things. The Flowers Swayed is at its best when leaning into its twinkling synth line, making me wish this element was even more prominent throughout. The track’s driving beat keeps things chugging along but often feels too murky and reserved to stand out. The same could be said about Flowers‘ melodies. They’re pleasant but rarely gripping, simply passing time as we wait for a knockout highlight that never comes. I’m reminded of last year’s Madeleine by the recently-rebranded Limelight — a song that mined much more from a similar sonic palette.
