Song Review: Kang Daniel – Electric Shock

Kang Daniel has had a dramatic 2024, with his self-created agency Konnect Entertainment folding after five years. His new mini album is credited under Warner Music, which also oversees his Japanese career. I’m not sure what’s next for Kang Daniel the businessman, but I’m glad he’s still releasing music. With that said, new single Electric Shock leaves much to be desired.

This style of song is really not for me. I find plodding beats quite tiresome in pop music, and despite its energetic title Electric Shock unleashes one of the most leaden stomps I’ve heard all year. Kang Daniel doesn’t have the nimble vocal style that would compliment this kind of instrumental, making the entire song feel tedious and predictable. And without a memorable hook, Electric Shock is anything but electrifying.

Daniel’s best work has unearthed a dynamic pulse and added texture to his vocals through layered arrangements. This makes Electric Shock even more of a head-scratcher. I’m sure it will have its fans, but I’m getting nothing from this.
