God of the Tribes (DCB-2025) by KRATORNAS
Bruno Zamora, the mastermind behind the band, says of the record:
“This album marks a turning point for Kratornas. Not because it tries to be ‘different,’ but because it couldn’t have come out any other way. Every part of this release came together naturally. The sound, the pacing, the tension … It wrote itself, shaped by instinct and intention. This album is unlike the usual Kratornas, so to anyone expecting it to sound like ‘early Kratornas’ will be disappointed.”
“This album isn’t about being ‘advanced’ or ‘innovative,’” he continues. “It’s a return to roots, distilled into something raw and real. I’ve had firsthand experience with this kind of ‘indigenous music.’ I was one of the drummers at festivals from 5th grade through my first year of high school. I didn’t copy those rhythms, but wrote my own, taking that foundation and fusing it with Kratornas. This album is the most natural and honest album I’ve ever done.”
It’s clear from the artwork and the title that themes of ritual, tribal history, and apocalypse are present. The band initially formed in 1995 and have been active off and on since then as the one-man project of Zamora, originally hailing from the Philippines and now based in Kaskatoon, Canada. He has been active in metal since the underground tape trading scene of the ’80s and is back with a more nuanced take on his blend of ritualistic black metal.
