It seemed, briefly, that experimental black metal institution Master’s Hammer had finally decided to call it a day in 2020, more than 30 years after their initial formation and two years after their album Fascinator. The itch to keep playing never truly went away, though, and Master’s Hammer have returned in 2025, armed with their ninth full-length, Maldorör Disco, out on Wednesday (November 26) via Darkness Shall Rise with a special early stream via Decibel.
If you were hoping for traditional black metal, Maldorör Disco will not scratch the itch. If you’re looking for an experimental, electronic-laden experience that pulls bright keyboards and bouncy, danceable sounds into the mix, then you just might find what you’re looking for. Tracks like “Genesis P. Orridge” betray some of Master’s Hammer’s influences on Maldorör Disco but even dyed-in-the-wool heshers will find something to latch on to here.
Check it out via the video below; if you dig what you hear, snag a copy digitally or via the label.
