Video Premiere: Bitter Branches – ‘Pity Party’

Philly-area post-hardcore outfit Bitter Branches introduced themselves a few years ago with the killer Your Neighbors Are Failures and now the supergroup are back with their new album, Let’s Give the Land Back to the Animals. Bitter Branches—the combination of vocalist Tim Singer (Deadguy, Kiss It Goodbye), drummer Jeff Tirabassi (Walleye), guitarists Matt Ryan (Cavalry) and Kevin Sommerville (Lighten Up!), and bassist/vocalist Dan Yemin (Paint It Black, Kid Dynamite, Lifetime)—will release their new album on March 6, but you can tap in to new single “Pity Party” right now.

The video begins with Singer declaring that this is the “first song we’ve written with our very tall bass player we found on the street” before beginning with a brooding intro that gives way to brooding, mid-paced post-hardcore. A combination of live video (which appears to be recorded at Philadelphia’s First Unitarian Church by Hate5six) and other B-roll spliced in, the visuals matches Singer’s distressed vocals and the sharp riffs which give the song a tense vibe, tracking with the intention behind the new offering.

“‘Pity Party’ is about how we’ve mechanized and normalized cruelty,” Singer explains. “It definitely comes from a vegan point of view, but ultimately it’s a human point of view that questions everything from meat-eating to capitalism and consumerism. Somehow I’m made out to be weird or extreme for giving a shit about things like cruelty and murder.”

If you still give a shit about things like cruelty and murder, this may be the album for you. Let’s Give the Land Back to the Animals is out on March 6 via Equal Vision and you can listen to “Pity Party” right now.
