Invincible VS Interview – Dave Hall Talks Mechanics, FGC and Brutality!

Setting out to be the best tag fighter in the universe, Skybound Entertainment’s in-house studio Quarter Up is pulling no punches with their upcoming 3v3 fighter Invincible VS.

We recently joined Game Director Dave Hall at GDC 2026’s Xbox Play Anywhere event to talk shop…

Invincible VS Interview – Dave Hall Talks Mechanics, FGC and Brutality!

Gamers Heroes

And we are live!

I love my fighters, and I love the community that comes with them – and of course I love what I’m seeing with this release too!

First things first – I’d love to know:

What inspired the creation of Invincible VS?

Dave Hall

The inspiration came from this series and the IP!

I mean, the moment we saw it, we fell in love with it.

Both myself and Mike, our Executive Producer, just started talking about it, and this opportunity came up.

We’re former KI [Killer Instinct] devs and missed being in fighting games. We really wanted to get back to it, and so this was our chance to do it.

When we saw this IP, we were on it!

Gamers Heroes

That’s the way to do it!

While I’ve yet to read the Invincible comic, I do love the Amazon show

When it comes to Invincible VS’ 3v3 action, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 definitely come to mind.

But then Invincible proper is a very bloody and brutal series – and that brings Mortal Kombat to mind!

Playing the demo, I was also able to tap into maneuvers akin to Guilty Gear’s Roman Cancel mechanic.

On that note – whether it be fighters or anything else – what did you want to tap into for Invincible VS?

You’re definitely doing your own thing, but what are some things you wanted to go “even further beyond,” Dragon Ball-style?

Dave Hall

Oh yeah, for sure!

I think we were greatly inspired by Mortal Kombat, right? We’re inspired by all of them – honestly, just like pieces of all of them.

And as I said, we’re also former KI devs!

We wanted to bring that feeling of back and forth combat to a tag fighter – which we thought would be kind of unique in this genre.

Usually tag fighters are very combo-centric – like our game is – but they didn’t have a lot of back and forth inside the combo.

For us, it was really important for us to put our mechanics in there so you’re paying attention the entire time you’re playing.

Whether you’re on defense or offense, you’re always looking out for what’s happening.

Gamers Heroes

Yeah, always being in the moment – I totally understand!

You’ve also got all these different characters!

Looking at a roster like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and its 56 characters – each of them have their own unique functions.

What were some of the functions you wanted to include in Invincible VS?

Were there any mechanics like Phoenix Wright’s left-field style in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 that made you want to do your own thing?

Dave Hall

I think our newest character – who really shows off some of that – is Dupli-Kate. She’s really incredible!

She has her copies that she sends out for you.

It’s something I’ve never really seen that much of in a fighting game – it’s just a really cool mechanic.

I thought of her from the beginning – we knew we were going to make her. I knew she was going to be a challenge from the get-go, but we planned on it and she turned out great.

Gamers Heroes

When I saw that news last Tuesday, I had to get the word out – I was seeing double!

On that note, talking Phoenix Wright…

Cecil is a great pick, but he’s definitely unique! How were you able to bring him into the fight?

I know there’s some things you can’t talk about, but compared to heroes like Omni-Man and Dupli-Kate, it’s a unique approach.

What did you want to add to his character?

Dave Hall

Well, we loved his personality!

He’s just such a fun character – from the way he emotes, to everything he does, to his whole backstory, to just everything about him.

I think, for us, it was just like:

“Let’s just have him in there with the superheroes, and let’s have him spend all the money in the world.”

Gamers Heroes

There you go – cash is king!

On that note, we’re talking about these personalities…

Obviously, you got J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man in the series, along with personalities like Rex Splode.

Everybody in the Invincible series is so unique.

I know you mentioned Invincible VS’ unique intro clips SNK-style – how else are you looking to bring these characters to life?

Dave Hall

We have a lot of clips that come on, especially when they’re coming in and out of the fight and when they’re coming in to tag.

They’re all based on the opponent you’re facing too – which is really fun!

We also have a lot of in-game VO as you’re playing as well.

For instance, when Mark comes in and knocks somebody’s head off, he’s like,

“Oh shit!”

True to serious form!

Gamers Heroes

I like that!

Dave Hall

Yeah!

It’s really fun for us to capture their personalities.

Gamers Heroes

So on that same note, I know Ella Mental is new to the title – that’s awesome!

What was it like designing each character, and what was your favorite part?

As you said, you’re creating something new to the universe that’s true to series form…

Dave Hall

For Atom Eve in particular – it was fun to try to make her brutal.

She was really brutal in the series – but making a projectile character brutal in this game was really interesting to do.

“What kind of constructs was she going to have? How were we going to make this work?”

It was really fun bringing her to life, especially with this projectile element.

I mean, she was our first projectile character, so we had to make a projectile system – just to even make it on the screen.

Figuring out how to make her awesome and brutal from a range – but obviously not somebody that’s going to win in all ranges.

So she was a fun one!

Gamers Heroes

I previously interviewed MarkMan, and I know Invincible VS was at EVO 2025 – the FGC is truly incredible!

Talking Bay Area, I grew up with the fighting game scene at Castro Valley Golfland.

What’s it like working with the FGC on this release?

Dave Hall

It is so fun for us!

We want to have as many FGC tests as we humanly can – we love their feedback.

We’re sitting in these rooms with them, listening to everything they’re saying. They’ll send us feedback, and then we turn things around.

It’s one of the big things we’re setting this project up to be – we can quickly iterate on anything that’s happening.

If they’re feeling something wrong with the motion controls, we can say that we’re going to go right in there and change things a day later.

We’re very reactive to what they’re saying, and proactive to make sure it’s even better for the next time.

And so every time they play the game, they always say:

“Wow, it’s so much better than before!”

That’s our big goal.

Gamers Heroes

That is the highest praise right there!

Keeping it short and sweet…

Who’s your favorite character from the series? I know, it’s like picking your favorite child…

Let’s narrow it down to three – it’s a three-on-three fighter, right?

Dave Hall

I’ll tell you the team I like using right now…

I love using Bulletproof! He’s got kind of a mix-up game and is really fun to play with. I love his little clips and everything he’s got going on.

Thula is also one of my favorites – she’s the one with the hair braid. She’s kind of a mid-range fighter and is really fun.

She can grab, hit with her hair, and bring them up to you – which is really fun!

Then I kind of go back and forth on my tank-kind of character, but right now I’m Monster Girl!

Gamers Heroes

It’s all about that balance! Got to have those heavy hitters

I really appreciate the time, and I’ll see you come April!

Invincible VS will release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Xbox on PC April 30.
