Song Review: HITGS – Cherry Blossom

Throughout their career, HITGS’s music has often hinged upon deliberately cheesy and chintzy sounds. Their early work felt as if it was composed for a kid’s show, but last year’s Happy teased a more mature (and satisfying) transformation. New single Cherry Blossom continues that transformation, but in a disappointingly drowsy way.

These soft songs about cherry blossoms tend to be a tradition during K-pop’s spring, and the best of them find a way to bolster their subdued nature with a suite of dynamic melodies. This Cherry Blossom is middle-of-the-pack all the way. It will offend no one. It will thrill no one. It serves its purpose as pleasant mood music. Whether you’re in need of pleasant mood music or not will define your relationship with the track. It’s quite functional in this way and it’s difficult to write much about functional music.
