The phrase “crying on the dancefloor” connotes a certain type of dance record — propulsive and sleek but driven by a sentimental (often melancholic) melody. It’s a contrast many of us love and even though the title of Lee Chaeyeon’s new single promises the exact opposite, its melding of emotion with club aesthetics is very welcome.
Chaeyeon already boasts some great dance tracks to her name, but it’s been awhile since we’ve heard from her. She comes roaring back on No Tears On The Dancefloor, offering a full-fledge dance-pop moment. At its heart, this is a straightforward radio pop track, but it’s given the polish and pizzazz it deserves thanks to a heavy dose of dramatic strings. There’s a sense of ceremony driving the song and this vibe makes its simple melodies feel more sweeping than they are. Strings and dance music have been intertwined for decades (just ask Gloria Gaynor), and add both a wistfulness and strength to a genre that’s easy to get swept up in.
As with so many songs of this K-pop era, No Tears On The Dancefloor could be improved with a longer runtime. The song feels complete, but misses the chance to whip its sentiment into the kind of transcendent experience great dance music can provide. Imagine how amazing this would be with a lengthy instrumental break and strings-assisted crescendo. Take your time on the dancefloor, artists! You already have our attention. Do something with it.
