We’ll give 30,000 Monkies a pass on their clearly misspelled name, simply because they’re Belgian and English isn’t their first language. Or maybe this is intentional to provoke interest. Who knows? All we know for sure is that the noisy, experimental quartet—Ruben Savelkoul (guitar/vocals/programming), Michiel De Naegel (guitar/vocals), Cyril Beerten (bass/vocals), Mattias Jonniaux (drums)—have a new album about to drop (Super Rebound) and we’re introducing the latest single, “Unsound Hero,” from said full-length. Strap in for six-plus minutes of slow-burning dirgy angst on this one that goes from weird melancholy auto-tuned tension to full-on face-punching sludge with anguished screams.
Super Rebound was recorded by Kasper De Sutter and Martijn De Bondt at GAM Studios. Mixing was done by Scott Evans at Antisleep Audio, and mastering by Matthew Barnhart. It’s set for release on CD, vinyl and digitally via FVN KVULT Rekords on September 18. Place your preorder here.
The band described the track as such:
“‘Unsound Hero’ is about almost wandering off to the dark side when hostile forces keep pushing all the wrong buttons. Unlike a lot of other tracks on the album, this one starts with a slow-burning intro. We had fun layering some deep melodic vocals with uncanny, autotuned choirs, trying to increase the tension with every added layer. But eventually, of course, we wanted to put the hammer down—BAM! After this, the hero drifts completely off the map, left with nothing but two clean guitars, screaming into an empty space. But then all of a sudden—BAM!—another hammer, arriving unexpectedly, used by our hero to flatten everything in his path once and for all: a reluctant but absolute obliteration for anyone who left him no choice.”
