On June 27th, 2001, Gilbert Arenas was drafted by the Warriors 21 years ago, making it a great time to look at all of the remarkable records and historic achievements the legendary Point Guard has to his name.
Gilbert Arenas was selected in the second round (31st overall) by the Golden State Warriors in the 2001 NBA Draft. Arenas, or “Agent Zero,” quickly became a fan favorite due to his ability to score, pass, and close out games by hitting CLUTCH shots to walk away with the upper hand. Arenas spent two seasons with the Warriors before signing a league-altering six-year, $6o million contract with the Washington Wizards in 2003 that changed the financial earning potential for second round picks.
The California native played ball at Arizona University for two seasons before declaring for the Draft. In his time at Arizona, Arenas partnered up with Richard Jefferson and took the Wildcats to the 2001 NCAA Championship, falling just short to the Duke Blue Devils. Although Arenas fell to the second round due to some pre-draft immaturity concerns, he won the 2002-03 Most Improved Player award during his second NBA season and earned a significant and well-deserved raise from his new home in the Nation’s Capital.
Agent 0 partnered with legends like Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler, and Larry Hughes in Washington. Arenas made his first All-Star appearance in 2005, followed by two more appearances in 2006 and 2007 with DC. Although Arenas was never able to bring a championship to the District, his work ethic, clutch shot-making, and impressive records will always be admired and respected by the Washington fanbase.
