It’s not often that a K-pop track demands attention from its title alone, but I certainly did a double take when I spotted the name of Wheein’s new single The Symphony Of Fxxkboys. Not only is it a bold statement for a relatively conservative industry, but its unexpected combination of words instantly makes you wonder how the song will sound.
Before you get too excited, there’s nothing symphonic about this track. Wouldn’t that have been cool? A totally overblown production supporting lyrics you wouldn’t expect to garner symphonic heft? Instead, The Symphony Of Fxxkboys is guitar-led alterna-pop in the vein of many Western artists of the moment. It’s definitely a big swing for Wheein and she pulls off the genre as well as you might expect given her strong vocal talent. But within this lineage of songs, Fxxkboys feels a bit too reliant on its punchline. The melodies are par for the course, lightly anthemic but quite predictable.
However, this isn’t the kind of song that’s too dependent on technical aspects like structure, melody and sound. The Symphony Of Fxxkboys will live or die on how deeply it resonates with its listeners. I imagine it will hit its target audience hard. And quite frankly, I’m pleased that it aims for a specific audience at all — even if that audience isn’t necessarily me.
