Gamers Heroes

I really appreciate the time today!

I know you’ve previously done voice acting for CookieRun: Kingdom, SMITE, and countless other great properties.

How would you say your work on those properties helped prepare you for Peach?

Courtney Lin

I would say that the biggest thing that’s honestly prepared me for any voice acting role has been acting training.

You may have heard this from other voice actors, but when you hear “voice actor,” it’s the actor part of it that’s more important than the voice part of it.

When a lot of people think about voice acting, they think: “Oh, you do different voices.”

Which is true – but doing different voices isn’t what’s going to get you the job.

It’s the acting part that’s going to get you the job.

And so I always tell people that the best thing to do to prepare for any role is to get acting training in.

Take classes! You can go to school for it, and you can take workshops – just familiarize yourself with the craft.

Gamers Heroes

I have heard that!

I’ve also heard improv, along with iwanttobeavoiceactor.com.

On that note, when it comes to your toolbox – the one that you’ve developed over the years – would you say is distinctly you when it comes to your voice acting craft?

Courtney Lin

It’s hard to pinpoint!

I mean there’s definitely my essence – as vague as that sounds.

But truly, there is something unique about every single person on the planet.

Whatever that unique thing is, it is going to be your superpower!

No one is ever going to be able to do Courtney Lin the way Courtney Lin does, you know?

No one’s going to be able to do like Kevin Afghani the way Kevin does Kevin Afghani.

It’s really just putting yourself into it – your own life experiences, your own memories, and your own work into your craft.

Gamers Heroes

Distinctly you – I love that!

On that note, I know you have your 1UP! Show – there’s so much heart there too.

About to say, there are experts meeting with experts here – it’s celebrity royalty!

What has been your favorite moment from the show?

Do you have one moment that you’re especially like,

“Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this just happened – this is the best moment ever!”

Courtney Lin

I just have so much fun gaming with the guests!

I’m not a great gamer myself – I’m by no means an expert!

But just having fun in a relaxed environment, just learning all the little gems and drops of knowledge people give.

Especially because we don’t just interview other actors – we interview people in production, people who do directing and music and other things and genres I’m not familiar with.

Really, all of us are little pieces in the giant puzzle that is like the product that eventually gets presented to people!

It’s like really cool to learn about other people’s jobs and what they do and how they contribute to the industry.

Gamers Heroes

Yeah!

I think everybody’s got a story to tell, and it takes a village – there’s strength in community. Definitely hear you loud and clear.

What is one piece of advice you’d wish you to tell your past self when it came to voice acting?

Something like “don’t do this,” or “double down and do this, go even further beyond” Dragon Ball Z style?

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give?

Courtney Lin

It’s hard to say…

I feel like there’s a part of me that wishes I started this sooner, because I never really thought acting was on the table for me growing up.

At the same time, I do believe our experiences make us who we are, and we are where we are today because of how things fell into place.

So that’s my nugget about that.

Besides that, I would probably tell myself the knowledge I have now. I know where to take classes, I know what workshops to take.

I feel like at the beginning of my career, I was throwing money at things.

I was working any job I can – anyone that’ll hire me to give me money, I will take that job. Just taking every class under the sun, learning from everybody, and assuming everyone’s an expert.

And then over time, as I became more professional and more established, I looked back and said: “That was actually a bad class. I can’t believe this person told me to do this, because that was awful advice.”

But I didn’t know at the beginning, you know?

Gamers Heroes

But you got a story out of it, right?

Courtney Lin

I did get a story out of it!

It’s just things like that I wish I knew.

Gamers Heroes

Is there a moment that you can talk about?

Like, “I can’t believe this just happened – this will never happen again?”

Courtney Lin

So I didn’t know at the beginning of my career that if you have an agent or a manager, you’re not supposed to pay them unless you book a job.

There are scammy people who will say, “Oh, if you want me to be your agent or manager, you have to pay me this much money every month.”

I didn’t know that’s not kosher, and at a franchised establishment it’s actually illegal for them to do that.

I didn’t know, and so I think I ended up giving this one scammer a few thousand before I realized that they were just taking my money.

Gamers Heroes

Never again.

Courtney Lin

Never again!

Gamers Heroes

You’ve also got great community events! Fire & Ice RGX obviously, but I saw you were also just at GalaxyCon Oklahoma City.

There are a lot of people that look up to you!

I mean, The Rolodex Princess is dressed up as Peach today!

What are some of your favorite community stories?

Courtney Lin

I really admire all the people who cosplay, because I don’t have the artistic wit, talent, time, or the patience to make these beautiful, elaborate costumes with such great attention to detail.

I also really love watching everyone dress up and hearing personal stories from the fans!

Any time a fan comes up and talks about how they’ve connected to a particular project I’m in, or a particular character that I helped create, it just makes it that much more meaningful.

It’s very special to me to hear those things from people!

Gamers Heroes

It’s fantastic work!

I know you talked a little bit about taking theater classes and things like that.

What is one piece of advice you suggest to those entering the voice acting space that are just starting out?

At Summer Game Fest and other events, there are a lot of people who want to get into the Voice Acting space themselves.

Classes are definitely good, but is there a particular teacher or a movie that really stood out to you, something that resonated with you and set the foundation?

Courtney Lin

Honestly, it’s the same thing I said before!

Just learn how to act – like, truly learn the foundations of acting.

All the way to the basics of: “What do you want, what’s your objective in the scene” – all of that.

It can sound hoity-toity sometimes, but truly that is where it all begins.

Gamers Heroes

Yeah!

Ending on a short and sweet note…

Is there any type of voice acting style you’ve always wanted to try?

Speaking with Zach Aguilar, he mentioned that he wanted to manifest a deep voice instead of the “goodest, bestest boy” voice in titles like Demon Slayer; something more like The Boys’ Homelander.

While I can’t see you as Homelander, is there a style you’ve always wanted to try?

Courtney Lin

I feel like I’ve played quite a spectrum!

I do play a lot of “goody two-shoe” characters, but I also voice Panty in New Panty & Stocking

I’ve played a lot of rich mean girls for whatever reason, so I’ve gone across the spectrum in that manner…

I think what I’m very much excited by now when I get to work on different things is when I get to try something new.

Doing something new and unfamiliar is terrifying, but usually when I feel that little leap of fear in my heart, it’s then followed by excitement!

It’s like,

“Ooh, what can I explore here? What have I never done before?”

I just find it so fun and so fascinating!

Gamers Heroes

I love SubwayTakes – they talked about that new and unfamiliar, saying:

“Embarrassment is an underexplored emotion – go out there and make a fool of yourself.

Go out there and do it – everything you want is on the other side of that!”

It’s an absolute pleasure – thank you so much!

Courtney Lin

Thank you!

I can finally say… I’m the voice of 👑🍑 Princess Peach and Baby Peach in Mario Kart World! Eternally grateful for @Nintendo , for trusting me to help carry the legacy of this icon. (Continued🔽) pic.twitter.com/7HOGTsFtCz
