Song Review: BBGirls – Body Wave

Over the next few weeks, there are a number of female acts scheduled for comebacks who have reliably delivered summer bangers in the past. This raised my hopes for a big summer hit this year, but judging by teasers and full releases I’m striking out so far. BBGirls (formerly Brave Girls) owned summer of 2021 with the double whammy of Chi Mat Ba Ram and After We Ride. Sadly, since rebranding they’ve lost those megawatt producers and you can hear it in the music.

I guess Body Wave is a 2026 version of a summer hit — a bit too subdued, repetitive and short on dynamic melody. Topliners have apparently forgotten how to write a chorus, opting for one or two phrases repeated over and over again instead. There’s enough bounce in Body Wave to make it enjoyable (at this point in 2026 I’ll take whatever I can get, honestly) and I like how the song grows fuller as it goes, but the critic in me just can’t help but compare it to the pinwheeling, explosive summer hits of years past. It could be so much more musically ambitious, and that lack of scope is frustrating.

If I head into Body Wave with no expectations, it’s a simple, fun pop track. The girls sound great, even if the arrangement doesn’t do anything interesting with their vocals. There are touches of summery production that brighten the tone and the inherent silliness of the track is charming. I guess I just want to hear a song that genuinely excites me and Body Wave feels more like a fun little diversion than a summer centerpiece.
